Background of the Study

As cyber threats become more sophisticated, it is critical for organizations, especially commercial banks, to implement comprehensive IT security policies to protect sensitive data and ensure the integrity of their operations (Ogunyemi & Bello, 2023). In Gombe State, commercial banks are increasingly adopting enterprise-wide IT security policies to safeguard against data breaches, fraud, and hacking attempts that can damage their reputation and financial stability.

An enterprise-wide IT security policy provides a structured approach to managing security across the organization by establishing guidelines for data protection, user access, incident response, and system monitoring. While these policies are essential, their effectiveness can be compromised by factors such as poor implementation, lack of employee training, and evolving cyber threats. This study aims to analyze the IT security policies in commercial banks in Gombe State and evaluate their effectiveness in mitigating risks.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the development and implementation of IT security policies, commercial banks in Gombe State continue to face significant challenges in safeguarding their systems and data. Security breaches, data leaks, and unauthorized access remain persistent problems. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of these policies in protecting the banks from evolving cyber threats.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the IT security policies in commercial banks in Gombe State and assess their comprehensiveness.
  2. To analyze the effectiveness of these IT security policies in preventing security breaches and protecting sensitive data.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by commercial banks in Gombe State in implementing and maintaining effective IT security policies.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key components of IT security policies in commercial banks in Gombe State?
  2. How effective are IT security policies in preventing security breaches and protecting sensitive data in commercial banks?
  3. What challenges do commercial banks in Gombe State face in implementing and maintaining IT security policies?

Research Hypotheses

  1. IT security policies do not significantly reduce the occurrence of security breaches in commercial banks in Gombe State.
  2. The effectiveness of IT security policies in protecting sensitive data is not significantly influenced by the quality of their implementation.
  3. The challenges faced by commercial banks in Gombe State do not significantly hinder the effectiveness of IT security policies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on commercial banks in Gombe State, analyzing the IT security policies in place and their effectiveness. A limitation of the study may be the restricted access to sensitive security data from banks, as well as the potential for bias in self-reported effectiveness.

Definitions of Terms

IT Security Policies: Formalized guidelines and procedures aimed at safeguarding an organization’s information systems from cyber threats.
Security Breaches: Unauthorized access, exposure, or manipulation of sensitive data or systems.
Enterprise-Wide: An approach that applies across the entire organization rather than to individual departments or functions.
